Silicones are treated as a single category by almost everyone arguing about them, and they are not one. The review of their role in hair care sorts them three ways, and the sorting is what the argument actually turns on.

Water-insoluble, including Dimethicone, amodimethicone and cyclomethicone. These “offer robust film-forming and conditioning effects; however, they may lead to accumulation if not properly cleansed”.

Water-soluble, such as dimethicone copolyol, which “rinse out more effectively, reducing concerns about residue”.

Volatile, including cyclomethicone and cyclopentasiloxane, which “evaporate after application, delivering a lightweight finish without leaving behind any residue”.

Three behaviours, one word on an avoid-list. A routine built on volatile silicones has no buildup question at all, and the rule that removes all of them cannot tell the difference.

What makes this one unusual

Amodimethicone is amino-functional, and the review describes the consequence precisely: amino-functional silicones “exhibit a unique capability to selectively bind to the most damaged areas of the hair shaft through electrostatic interactions, providing targeted conditioning”.

Damaged hair carries more negative charge than intact hair, because the cuticle has been opened and sites are exposed. An amino group is positively charged. So the molecule is drawn to the damage rather than distributed evenly.

That is a genuinely elegant property and it is the reason amodimethicone behaves differently from plain dimethicone in practice. It does not coat the whole fibre uniformly and weigh it down; it concentrates where the fibre is worn. Hair that is damaged at the ends and sound at the roots gets treated accordingly, without anyone having to apply it selectively.

The trade, stated honestly

It is water-insoluble. That is the cost.

The review is direct about what removal takes: “the removal of water-insoluble silicones requires strong surfactants, which can be harsh on delicate or textured hair, potentially leading to dryness and brittleness”. And clarifying shampoos containing sulfates such as Sodium lauryl sulfate are “often employed to eliminate this residue”, but “excessive usage may result in dryness or even damage to the cuticle”.

So the two most repeated rules in curly hair care, avoid silicones and avoid sulfates, are describing one system from two ends. Follow both literally and nothing removes what you are still applying. Follow neither and you are stripping fragile hair weekly.

The coherent positions are: use insoluble silicones and clarify periodically, or use water-soluble and volatile ones and skip the sulfates. Mixing the halves is the version that produces the buildup people blame on silicones.

Where the mineral oil comparison fails

Silicones are often described as plastic or as suffocating the hair. Hair is not alive above the follicle and does not breathe, so the second objection has nothing to act on.

The film is real and the buildup is real. Whether that is a problem depends entirely on whether it is ever removed, which is a routine question rather than an ingredient question.

On the label

Look for amodimethicone in conditioners and leave-in products, usually alongside trideceth-12 and cetrimonium chloride, which are there to emulsify it. That trio appearing together is a reliable sign of an amino silicone system.

Names ending in -cone, -conol, -silane and -siloxane are the silicone family generally. The ones beginning with cyclo are usually the volatile ones, and PEG-modified names such as dimethicone copolyol are usually the water-soluble ones. That is a more useful heuristic than avoiding the suffix.
