Are silicones bad for hair?
A category argued about as though it were a single substance, which it is not.

Ask whether silicones are bad for hair and you are asking about at least three different groups of molecules that behave differently. The review that sorts them makes the argument tractable.
Three groups, not one
Water-insoluble. Dimethicone, Amodimethicone, cyclomethicone. These “offer robust film-forming and conditioning effects; however, they may lead to accumulation if not properly cleansed”.
Water-soluble. Dimethicone copolyol and similar, which “rinse out more effectively, reducing concerns about residue”.
Volatile. Cyclomethicone and cyclopentasiloxane, which “evaporate after application, delivering a lightweight finish without leaving behind any residue”.
Only the first group is what the avoid-list is actually about. A product built on volatile silicones leaves nothing behind to build up, and a rule that removes every ingredient ending in -cone removes it too.
What they do well
Reduce friction, so hair combs without breaking. Smooth the cuticle, so it reflects light. Reduce moisture loss. Protect against heat.
Amodimethicone does something better than that. Amino-functional silicones “exhibit a unique capability to selectively bind to the most damaged areas of the hair shaft through electrostatic interactions, providing targeted conditioning”. Damaged hair is more negatively charged, the molecule is positively charged, and it goes where it is needed rather than coating everything evenly.
For hair that breaks easily, reduced mechanical damage during combing is not a cosmetic benefit. Breakage is one of the main ways hair is lost, and it is the way that responds to conditioning.
The real objection
Buildup, and it is genuine.
The problem is that the fix has a cost: “the removal of water-insoluble silicones requires strong surfactants, which can be harsh on delicate or textured hair, potentially leading to dryness and brittleness”.
So this is a trade rather than a verdict. Use the heavier silicones and clarify periodically, accepting the occasional harsh wash. Or use the lighter ones and skip it. Both work. What does not work is applying insoluble silicones while avoiding everything that removes them, which is the routine the standard advice produces.
The claim that is simply wrong
Silicones do not suffocate hair. Hair above the scalp is not living tissue, it does not respire, and there is nothing there to suffocate.
The scalp is living, and a silicone sitting on skin is a different question, but the objection as usually stated is about the strand.
How to tell which one you have
Names ending in -cone, -conol, -silane and -siloxane are the family. Names beginning with cyclo are usually volatile. PEG-modified names such as dimethicone copolyol are usually water-soluble. Plain dimethicone and amodimethicone are the insoluble ones.
