Most pages on this site exist to say that a feared ingredient is less interesting than its reputation. This one is different, and it is worth having for the contrast.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is a detergent. It makes shampoo foam and cleansers strip oil, and it does irritate skin. That is not a contested claim or a marketing position. It is established well enough that dermatology researchers use SLS as their model irritant: when a study needs skin reliably provoked in order to measure something, SLS is what they apply. One review describes it as having an irritating effect on skin and being “used extensively in models for testing the response of skin to irritants”.

An ingredient that scientists use precisely because it will irritate you is an ingredient that irritates you.

So why is the reputation still wrong

Because the claim that travelled was not the true one.

The story that made SLS famous was that it causes cancer. That claim has no evidential basis and has been circulating as a chain email and then a social media post for decades, long enough that some versions still cite institutions that publicly denied ever saying it. It is one of the more thoroughly documented hoaxes in consumer health.

The result is a peculiar situation where a genuinely irritating ingredient is avoided for a reason that is false, which means people avoid it for the wrong products. Someone who drops an SLS shampoo because of cancer worry and keeps an SLS-containing facial cleanser has optimised backwards.

Irritant, not allergen, and why that matters

An irritant damages the skin barrier directly, in a dose-dependent way, in anyone given enough exposure. An allergen provokes an immune response in the people sensitised to it, at any dose.

SLS is the first kind. Practically, that means:

Concentration and contact time decide everything. A shampoo rinsed off in ninety seconds is a different exposure from a cleanser left on. Rinse-off formats are where SLS mostly appears and where it does least.

More exposure means more reaction. Unlike an allergy, there is no threshold below which you are safe and above which you react. It is a slope.

It varies by site. The research on this found the upper back more susceptible than the forearm, which is one reason people report very different experiences with the same product.

If your skin is already compromised, by eczema or over-washing or a cold winter, the same product that was fine in July is not fine in January. That is the ingredient behaving consistently and your barrier changing.

SLES is not the same thing

Sodium laureth sulfate, SLES, appears on labels beside SLS and is often lumped in with it by “sulfate-free” marketing.

They are not equivalent. A review of hair cosmetic ingredients puts it directly: SLES “can, in contrast to other detergents such as SLS, be described as mild”. So a product that swapped SLS for SLES made a real change, and one that markets itself as sulfate-free while containing SLES is playing with the category name rather than the chemistry.

Is sulfate-free worth buying

If your scalp or skin reacts to a foaming cleanser, yes, and the reason is irritation rather than anything more dramatic.

If you are avoiding it because of what you read about cancer, no, and the more useful thing to take from this page is that the claim was never true. Avoiding an ingredient for a false reason means you will also stop avoiding it for a false reason, and neither decision was ever connected to your skin.
