Open a supplement and the ingredient list under the Supplement Facts panel usually holds two or three names that are not the reason you bought it. Magnesium stearate is one. Silicon dioxide is almost always another.

It is there because powders clump. Fine particles absorb moisture and stick, a tablet press jams, a capsule fills unevenly, and a dose stops being a dose. Silicon dioxide is added in small amounts to keep the powder flowing.

Why it asks nothing further

This page exists mostly as a contrast, because the ingredient sitting beside it on the same label does ask something further.

Magnesium stearate is made from stearic acid, and the regulation defining that permits edible sources without saying animal or vegetable, which is why the halal and kosher page lists it among the ingredients where origin is the whole question.

Silicon dioxide has no such fork. It is silicon and oxygen, the same combination as quartz and sand, and the US regulation describes it as manufactured by vapour phase hydrolysis with the particle size chosen to achieve the intended effect. There is no fat in the story, so there is no animal or vegetable version of it, and no certification question hiding behind the name.

For a reader avoiding animal ingredients or keeping halal or kosher, that makes it one of the few names on a supplement label that can simply be crossed off.

The two worries, and where they come from

“It is sand.” Chemically it is the same compound, and that comparison is doing rhetorical work rather than informational. Water and hydrogen peroxide differ by one atom; sameness of formula is not sameness of material. The food and supplement grade is a fine amorphous powder made to specification, not beach material.

The nanoparticle question. This one is genuine and unresolved rather than folklore. Regulators have looked at particle size in synthetic amorphous silica, and the discussion has moved as measurement methods improved. It sits in the same category as the temporary ADI on Carrageenan: an open file rather than a finding, and we would rather hand you that than round it in either direction.

Inhaled versus eaten

The strongest-sounding claims about silica come from occupational medicine, and they are about a different exposure entirely. Crystalline silica dust inhaled over years in quarrying and construction causes serious lung disease, which is well established and has nothing to do with a tablet.

Different crystal form, different route into the body, different quantity by orders of magnitude. Reading an occupational hazard as a dietary one is the most common way this ingredient gets misrepresented, and the general shape of that error is the subject of the guide on hazard and exposure.
