Hazard versus exposure
One idea, and it defuses most of what you will read about ingredients.

Here is a sentence you have read a hundred times: this ingredient has been linked to cancer in studies.
It is often technically true. It is also, on its own, close to meaningless, and learning why is the single most useful thing on this website.
Two different questions
Hazard asks what a substance can do, in principle, at some dose, under some conditions. It is a property of the substance.
Exposure asks how much of it actually reaches you, by what route, and how often. It is a property of your situation.
Risk is the two together. Hazard on its own is not risk, and a number that describes only hazard cannot tell you whether to worry.
The stock example is the honest one: water is lethal at a high enough dose, and sunlight causes cancer. Neither statement tells you to stay indoors and stop drinking. What makes them manageable is that ordinary exposure sits nowhere near the level where the hazard becomes a risk.
What this looks like on a label
Take Potassium sorbate. Regulators set an acceptable daily intake for it: an amount you could consume every day, across a lifetime, without expecting harm. For sorbates that figure is currently 11 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. For someone weighing 70 kg that is roughly 770 mg, every day, forever. Ordinary dietary exposure is nowhere near it.
An article can truthfully say that studies have investigated sorbates for toxicity, because they have, which is how the intake figure exists at all. What that article usually omits is the dose at which anything was observed, and how far it sits from what a yoghurt delivers.
Or take Salicylic acid. High-dose oral salicylates in pregnancy carry real, documented concerns. A face wash containing 2 percent salicylic acid, used on a small area and rinsed off, is a different exposure entirely: different dose, different route, different everything. Advice written for the first case gets recycled as though it covered the second, and that recycling is the entire reason people are confused about it.
The three questions worth asking
When you meet a claim about an ingredient, these usually settle it.
At what dose? If a study fed animals an amount equivalent to several kilograms of a product a day, it tells you something about the molecule and very little about your breakfast.
By what route? Eaten, inhaled and applied to skin are not interchangeable. Skin is a reasonably good barrier. Something that matters when swallowed may barely arrive when spread on your arm, which is precisely the argument at the centre of the Retinol pregnancy question.
Compared to what? Removing a preservative does not produce a product with no preservative. It produces one with a different preservative, or a shorter shelf life, or more spoilage. There is no option with no trade-off, only a choice of trade-offs.
Why hazard-only ratings feel so satisfying
Because they are simple, and because caution feels free.
If you rate ingredients by hazard alone you get a clean, comparable number, and you never have to say “this is fine,” which is the sentence that gets you shouted at. The cost is that everything drifts towards alarming, the distinction between a real problem and a theoretical one erodes, and people spend their attention on preservatives while ignoring the things that carry far more evidence.
This is the argument at the heart of the debate about EWG’s hazard scores, and it is why Pura publishes no score at all.
Where precaution is still right
None of this means exposure reasoning always wins.
Sometimes the potential harm is severe and irreversible, the evidence is incomplete, and the thing you would give up is trivial. That is exactly the position with topical retinoids in pregnancy: the harm from the oral drug is well established, the topical evidence has not shown a clear increase in risk, and what you are being asked to give up is a moisturiser for a few months. Precaution is the sensible call there, and it is honest to say that it is precaution rather than a measured risk.
The point is not that caution is wrong. It is that you should be able to tell which kind of advice you are reading. The pregnancy page works through that distinction in more detail.
The short version
An ingredient is not dangerous or safe. A dose, by a route, in a person, is. Any page that gives you the first without the second has left out the part that determines the answer.
