Vitamin B12 is the awkward one. Almost every other nutrient a vegan diet is questioned about turns out to be available from plants with a little planning. This one is not.

“Foods of animal source are the only natural source of cobalamin in human diet,” as a 2026 clinical review puts it. The NHS says the same from the other direction: because B12 “is not found naturally in foods such as fruit, vegetables and grains, vegans may not get enough of it”.

So the nutrient is animal-associated. The supplement is not, and the reason is worth knowing.

What the regulation says about origin

Most pages on this site exist because a label conceals where something came from. Here the answer is written into the regulation.

The US rule affirming vitamin B12 as generally recognised as safe opens by stating that it “is produced commercially from cultures of Streptomyces griseus”.

That is a bacterium. No animal is involved in making the cyanocobalamin in a supplement or a fortified food, and the regulation states it as a matter of definition rather than as a claim a manufacturer makes.

The underlying biology is the reason it works out this way. B12 is not made by animals either. It is made by bacteria, and animals accumulate it. Growing the bacteria directly skips the animal, which is the same logic that gives us Vitamin D3 from lichen and rennet from fermentation.

Why this is the clearest answer on a supplement label

For a vegan, vegetarian, halal or kosher reader, most ingredient questions on a supplement fork on the supplier: Magnesium stearate can be plant or animal, Gelatin capsules are the shell to avoid, glycerin goes either way.

Cyanocobalamin does not fork. The manufacturing route is fermentation, and there is no animal-derived version of it in commerce to be confused with.

The two things that can still catch you out are elsewhere on the same label. The capsule is the first: gelatin or Hypromellose, and that is the fork that actually matters. The second is the fermentation medium, which is not on the label at all.

Cyanocobalamin against the other forms

You will meet methylcobalamin sold as the better form, usually at a higher price, on the argument that it is the body’s active form and needs no conversion.

Cyanocobalamin is the form with the largest evidence base, the best stability and the lowest cost, and it is what the fortification and public health literature is built on. It is converted in the body. The cyanide group that gives it its name is present in an amount too small to be of consequence at supplemental doses.

That is not an argument against methylcobalamin. It is an argument that the choice is closer than the marketing suggests, and that a cheap cyanocobalamin taken every day beats an expensive methylcobalamin taken occasionally.

The part that is genuinely clinical

Body stores last a long time, two to five years by the review’s account, so a deficiency develops gradually and quietly. That is why someone can change their diet and feel fine for years before anything shows.

It also means this is not a question to settle by reading an ingredient list. Whether you need B12, how much, and whether your level is adequate is a blood test and a conversation with a doctor. What a label can tell you is whether the form in front of you is the one you want, and on that narrow question the answer here is unusually clean.
