Biotin
A vitamin your gut bacteria already make, sold in enormous doses for hair, with a consequence that shows up in a laboratory rather than a mirror.

Biotin is the best selling ingredient in the hair supplement aisle, and it is the one ingredient on this site where the interesting consequence shows up in a blood test rather than in a person.
What the body actually needs
The NHS is unusually plain about this. Biotin “is needed in very small amounts to help the body make fatty acids”. And then: “The bacteria that live naturally in your bowel are able to make biotin, so it’s not clear if you need any additional biotin from the diet.”
Read that twice. Not that most people get enough. That it is not clear anyone needs any from food, because the bacteria in your gut produce it.
True deficiency exists and it is rare, arising from specific genetic conditions, prolonged intravenous feeding, some anticonvulsants, or eating a great deal of raw egg white, which contains a protein that binds biotin and blocks its absorption. In those situations biotin does something, including for hair, because correcting a deficiency corrects its consequences.
Everyone else is topping up a tank that was not empty.
What the regulation says about the topical version
There is a US regulation covering over-the-counter products sold for external use as hair growers, and it names its subjects: “amino acids, aminobenzoic acid, ascorbic acid, benzoic acid, biotin and all other B-vitamins, dexpanthenol” and a further list.
Its conclusion is not hedged: “all labeling claims for OTC hair grower and hair loss prevention drug products for external use are either false, misleading, or unsupported by scientific data”.
So a shampoo or serum sold on biotin for hair growth is making a claim the regulator has already characterised, in a rule still in force. That covers rubbing it on. Swallowing it is outside that regulation, and it has its own problem.
The part that matters in a laboratory
Many modern blood tests are built on the binding between biotin and streptavidin, a pairing chosen precisely because it is one of the strongest in biology. Flooding the sample with extra biotin competes with that chemistry.
The 2026 European Thyroid Association guideline records the effect: biotin, “widely used as a supplement”, has “been described to cause falsely high or low hormone results in streptavidin-biotin-based assays”. It lists biotin among the recognised causes of interference in TSH measurement alongside genetic variants and assay antibodies.
Falsely high or low, depending on the test design. On a thyroid panel this can produce a pattern that mimics Graves’ disease: suppressed TSH with raised free hormones, in someone whose thyroid is working normally. The guideline’s recommendation is direct: where interference is suspected to be due to medications, “we recommend repeat analyses of FT4 and/or FT3 after omission of the suspected agent, if possible”.
The mechanism is not damage. Nothing has gone wrong with you. The number is wrong, and the number is what gets acted on.
Why this lands on people who do not expect it
The chain is ordinary and nobody in it does anything wrong.
Someone takes a hair, skin and nails supplement, which is usually built on high-dose biotin. Months later they have routine bloods. The thyroid result comes back abnormal. Nobody asks about supplements, because a vitamin for hair does not sound like something that affects a thyroid test. What follows can be repeat testing, a scan, a referral, or treatment for a condition that is not there.
It is not common. It is completely avoidable, and it is avoided by one sentence in a waiting room.
In pregnancy this is worth a little more attention than usual, because thyroid function is checked more often and because biotin appears in many prenatal formulations. The dose is what matters rather than its presence, and that is a question for a midwife or doctor with the actual pack in hand.
Does it grow hair
In people who are deficient, yes, because that is what correcting a deficiency does.
In people who are not, the evidence is thin, and the regulation quoted above is the regulator’s summary of the topical version of the claim. The oral version has not been shown to do much either, and the studies most often cited are small or are in people with an underlying deficiency.
Hair supplements often contain other things that do have evidence behind them for specific deficiencies, iron in particular. If hair is thinning, finding out whether something is actually low is a blood test, and that is a better use of the same money than a formula that assumes the answer. Where it comes from
Manufactured biotin is produced synthetically rather than extracted from anything, so it raises none of the origin questions that Cyanocobalamin and Collagen do. The capsule around it is a different matter and is the usual fork.
