Question

Can biotin affect a thyroid test?

A supplement taken for hair that does nothing to the gland and something to the measurement, which is a harder problem than it sounds.

Part of Thyroid · Hair loss

This is the rare interaction where the substance does not act on the organ, the illness or the drug. It acts on the measurement.

What the guidance says

The NHS page on levothyroxine lists the things to mention before taking it, and biotin is on that list for a stated reason: “biotin (vitamin B7) as it can affect your thyroid tests”.

It sits in that list next to “calcium and iron supplements” and “antacids and other indigestion treatments”, but it does not belong to the same category as them. Those interfere with absorption of the medicine. Biotin interferes with the test.

Why that is a worse problem than it sounds

An underactive thyroid is diagnosed by measurement. The NHS describes it plainly: you “may have blood tests to check how much thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (T4) is in your blood”.

There is no symptom of a skewed test. It looks exactly like a result.

Why it catches people specifically

Biotin’s popular use is hair. It is in hair and nail supplements, in gummies, and in the high-dose products marketed for thinning, and the doses in those are often far above what anyone gets from food.

And almost nobody counts a hair gummy as a medicine. Asked whether they are taking anything, a person thinks of prescriptions. That is the gap, and it is why the guidance names biotin explicitly rather than leaving it under supplements in general.

What is worth doing

Mention it. Before a thyroid blood test, say what you are taking, including anything for hair, skin or nails, and let the person ordering the test decide whether it matters. That is a fifteen-second conversation that protects a result you will otherwise act on for months.

The same page gives the separate timing rule for the medicine itself: take it “on an empty stomach 30 to 60 minutes before your first meal of the day, any drink with caffeine, such as tea or coffee, or any other medicine”. Calcium carbonate and Ferrous sulfate are the two most common supplements that run into that instruction.

What this does not settle

Whether biotin does anything for hair, which is a different question with a different answer, and one the site treats separately in does biotin make hair grow.

It also does not tell you which direction a result moves or by how much. That depends on the assay a laboratory uses, which is not something a label or this page can know.
