Sucralose

An ingredient whose most repeated criticism is factually correct, which is unusual, and does not lead where people take it.

Sucralose is made by starting with sugar and replacing three groups on the molecule with chlorine atoms. The result is several hundred times sweeter, passes through mostly unchanged, and carries no calories worth counting.

The most common criticism of it is that it is a chlorinated compound. That criticism is chemically accurate, which puts this page in an unusual position: we cannot correct the fact, only the reasoning built on it.

The regulation says it out loud

The US definition gives the chemical name in full: 1,6-dichloro-1,6-dideoxy-β-D-fructofuranosyl-4-chloro-4-deoxy-α-D-galactopyranoside.

Read the prefixes and the chlorines are right there, named three times. Nothing is being hidden, and anyone repeating the claim is repeating the regulation.

Why the inference does not follow

“Contains chlorine” is not a property that transfers between compounds, and the examples are close to hand.

Table salt is sodium chloride, and the chloride ion is one of the electrolytes the body maintains deliberately. Hydrochloric acid in your stomach is chlorine doing essential work. Chlorine gas is lethal. These share an element and nothing else, because what a molecule does depends on the whole molecule rather than on an inventory of its atoms.

The version of this argument that spreads usually slides from “contains chlorine” to “is like bleach”, and bleach is sodium hypochlorite, a different compound again. Reasoning from an atom to a hazard is the same move that makes an E number look like a verdict, and it fails for the same reason.

What is genuinely open

Two things, and we would rather name them than leave the page sounding like a defence.

The gut microbiome. There is a live research literature on non-nutritive sweeteners and gut bacteria, with findings that do not yet assemble into a settled picture. It is an open file rather than a finding, the same shape as the temporary ADI on Carrageenan.

Heating. Sucralose is stable in ordinary use and less stable at high baking temperatures, which is why the granulated products sold for baking are usually bulked with something else. That is a manufacturing consideration rather than a warning, and it is why a Splenda spoonful often contains Maltodextrin as its bulk, which is worth knowing if you are counting anything.

In pregnancy, and for children

Both come up constantly and the honest answer is the same in each case: this is a question for a clinician who knows the person, not for a scanner and not for a website.

What we can offer is the label part. Sucralose is always named, never folded into a collective term, and appears in a great many products that do not present themselves as diet products, including medicines, yoghurts and sauces. If you are avoiding it during pregnancy or for a child, the ingredient list is reliable and the front of the pack is not, which is the standing advice on the pregnancy page.
