Sugar-free chewing gum, mints, diabetic chocolate, cough syrup, toothpaste. Sorbitol sweetens all of them, and it is also a humectant, which is why it holds moisture in soft-baked goods and in toothpaste that would otherwise dry into a brick.
It carries a warning that almost everyone reads as legal throat-clearing, and it is not.
The warning is written by the regulator
The US regulation does not merely permit a warning. It dictates the sentence:
The label and labeling of food whose reasonably foreseeable consumption may result in a daily ingestion of 50 grams of sorbitol shall bear the statement: “Excess consumption may have a laxative effect.”
Fifty grams, and a fixed form of words. That is a regulator naming a quantity and a consequence, not a manufacturer covering itself.
The mechanism behind it is not mysterious. Sorbitol is a polyol, poorly absorbed in the small intestine, so it travels on, drawing water with it and feeding gut bacteria on arrival. Water plus fermentation is the entire story.
This puts sorbitol in a small category with Aspartame: ingredients whose labels carry a specific mandated sentence that most readers pass over. The difference is that the aspartame statement is addressed to a rare condition and this one is addressed to anybody who eats enough.
The quantities are in the regulation
Ingredient lists almost never tell you how much of something is present. Sorbitol is one of the rare cases where a regulation puts numbers on it, describing the maximum levels good manufacturing practice produces:
99 percent in hard candy and cough drops. 98 percent in soft candy. 75 percent in chewing gum. 30 percent in baked goods. 12 percent in everything else.
Read those against the fifty gram figure and the arithmetic is uncomfortable rather than abstract. A bag of sugar-free sweets is mostly sorbitol by weight, and getting to fifty grams takes less of it than most people would guess. A stick or two of gum is nothing, and nobody reaches a laxative dose from toothpaste.
What it does not raise
No animal origin question. The US regulation describes it as produced by hydrogenation of sugars, a chemical process on a plant-derived feedstock. It is one of the ingredients that closes rather than opens, in the way Pectin and Agar do.
No gluten question in the substance, though the feedstock is a starch and can in principle be wheat-derived. The finished polyol is a sugar alcohol rather than a protein, which is the same reasoning that applies to Maltodextrin, and the gluten-free claim on the packet remains the sentence with a measured threshold behind it. The one about dogs
The genuinely dangerous sugar alcohol in this family is xylitol, and the danger is to dogs rather than to people. It causes a severe insulin response in dogs that does not occur in humans, and sugar-free gum and peanut butter are the usual routes.
Sorbitol is not xylitol, and the two sit side by side on ingredient lists in the same products. If you have a dog and you read labels for that reason, the name to look for is xylitol, and a veterinary surgeon rather than a website is who to call if a packet has gone missing.

Sugar-free sweets marketed to children are the place this ingredient and its warning meet most often, and the practical version is simple: the sentence on the packet is accurate and the quantity is the variable.
