Parabens
The most avoided preservatives in cosmetics, and a worry that rests on a finding almost everyone reports incorrectly.

Parabens preserve things. Any product containing water can grow bacteria and mould, and a preservative is what stops a cream becoming a health problem three weeks after opening. Parabens did that job cheaply and effectively for decades, in cosmetics and in some foods.
Then they became the most avoided ingredient class in the category, to the point where “paraben-free” is a selling proposition on products that never contained them. It is worth understanding exactly what happened, because the story is a precise example of how a real finding turns into a wrong conclusion.
The 2004 study, and what it showed
In 2004 Darbre and colleagues identified paraben esters in samples of human breast tumour tissue.
That is the finding. Parabens were present in the tissue.
What the study did not show, and did not claim to show, is that the parabens caused the tumours. Detecting a substance in tissue establishes that it got there. Establishing that it did something requires an entirely different kind of evidence, and the gap between those two statements is where the entire paraben panic lives.
It is a genuinely reasonable thing for a member of the public to misread. It is not a reasonable thing for the pages that report it to keep misreading twenty years later.
What the exposure evidence says
The reviews that followed asked the question the original study did not: at the doses people actually receive from cosmetics, could parabens plausibly do anything hormonal?
Parabens do have weak oestrogenic activity in laboratory assays. That is real and it is why the question was asked. But the review of the exposure evidence concludes that “it is biologically implausible that parabens could increase the risk of any oestrogen-mediated endpoint, including effects on the male reproductive tract or breast cancer”, and notes that no human studies have confirmed significant or even suggestive effects on hormone disruption or breast cancer in living people.

The limits that do apply
Not everything here is reassurance, and the limits are worth stating because they are the part usually left out of both sides of the argument.
Expert review set a threshold: 0.8 percent for the total sum of paraben esters in a personal care product, matching the European limit. So there is a ceiling and it is enforced, which is different from saying any amount is fine.
Europe went further and removed several of the longer-chain parabens from use, keeping the short-chain ones that have the best data. So the class is not treated as uniform by regulators, and a page that says “parabens are safe” flat is being as careless as one that says they cause cancer.
What replaced them
Mostly Phenoxyethanol, and it is worth asking whether that was an improvement or a relabelling.
On the evidence it was neutral to positive: phenoxyethanol reviews well and is a rare sensitiser. But the substitution was driven by marketing rather than by a safety finding, and the general pattern is worth noticing. When an ingredient is removed because of public feeling rather than evidence, whatever replaces it has usually been studied less, not more.
The one thing that would be worse than either is no preservative at all. A water-based cream without one is a microbiological problem, and “preservative-free” on a product that should have one is the only genuinely alarming claim in this whole area.
