Octocrylene is listed as a UVB filter, and it is one. That is not usually why it is in the bottle.

The job the category name hides

Avobenzone is the UVA filter most American sunscreens rely on, and it is photolabile: light degrades it, which is an awkward property in a product worn in light. Formulators fix this by adding something that slows the breakdown, and octocrylene is the most common choice.

So on many labels octocrylene is present as a support ingredient. Its own contribution to the SPF number is modest. Its contribution to whether the UVA protection survives an afternoon is not.

This is a genuinely interesting case for label reading, because the ingredient list is complete and accurate and still tells you the wrong thing. You see two filters and infer two filters. What is actually there is one filter and its bodyguard.

Nothing in the labelling rules would let a manufacturer say otherwise. Ingredient lists name substances, not the reasons they were chosen.

The absorption measurement

In the FDA maximal use trial, octocrylene reached maximum plasma concentrations of 2.9 and 7.8 nanograms per millilitre for two sprays, and 5.7 for both a lotion and a cream.

Above the 0.5 nanogram per millilitre threshold at which FDA requires further toxicology, and roughly thirty times below the Oxybenzone readings from the same volunteers and the same protocol.

The pattern across all four ingredients in that study was the same: measurable systemic absorption, an unfinished toxicology programme, and authors who wrote in their own conclusion that the findings do not mean people should stop using sunscreen. The full argument is on Oxybenzone.

Where octocrylene has its own file

Two things are specific to it rather than shared with the class.

Contact allergy. Octocrylene is a recognised contact allergen and photoallergen, uncommon but real, and it shows up more in people already sensitised to ketoprofen, an anti-inflammatory with a related structure. If you have reacted to a topical ketoprofen product, this is the sunscreen ingredient worth knowing the name of.

Degradation over time. There is a literature on octocrylene generating benzophenone as a degradation product as a formula ages. It is contested on both the amounts and the significance, and it is not a settled finding. Worth knowing it exists, and worth not treating an unresolved argument as a conclusion.

If you would rather not

The mineral route avoids the whole class. Zinc oxide covers UVA without degrading, so it needs no stabiliser and the supporting-cast question does not arise.

The other route is a formula built on Bemotrizinol, added to the US monograph in June 2026, which is photostable in its own right. A filter that does not break down does not need protecting, which removes the reason octocrylene is usually there.
