Label check

Finding the company to ask about a cosmetic label

When an ingredient detail is missing, prepare a question for the company identified on the label. Include the exact product and variant so the answer is not about a different formula.

This check covers US labels. Start with the exact package and variant you have, then use the steps below. Explore more skin & hair checks.

What to look at

  1. Look on the outer packaging as well as the container for company details.
  2. Record the full product name, size and identifying code if shown.
  3. Ask for the specific missing detail without filling it in yourself.
A little practice

Read this label.

Same product name, two variants: fragrance-free and original.

Illustrative excerpt · not a real product
What it tells you

A question that names only the product range can get an answer for the wrong variant. Include the variant and a clear label photo in your request.

Why this reading matters

Cosmetic ingredients are generally ordered by predominance, with exceptions for ingredients at one percent or less and color additives. The list is not a table of ingredient concentrations. US Food and Drug Administration.

What the label cannot settle

A company name does not by itself prove authenticity or suitability. This is a way to obtain missing information, not a certification of a product or seller.

Put the check to work

Compare the exact words and amounts on your package with the example. If a panel is missing, a photo is unreadable or the manufacturer has not disclosed a detail, keep that detail as unknown. A different flavor, shade or formulation needs its own check.
