Pura

Comparison

Fooducate or Pura: a tracker or an ingredient reader

A nutrition tracker with a grading system, against an ingredient reader with no grades at all.

Part of Pregnancy

This is the least like-for-like comparison on the site, and saying so up front is more useful than pretending the two apps compete head on.

Fooducate is a nutrition tracker. It grades packaged food, counts what you eat across a day, and helps you hold to a way of eating. Pura reads ingredient labels and tells you what is in the thing you are holding, measured against your own profile. There is overlap in the aisle and almost none anywhere else.

What each one is actually for

Fooducate answers “how am I eating.” Grades, macronutrients, a running total, progress over weeks. That is a question about your diet as a whole, and it needs tracking to answer.

Pura answers “what is this.” One product, right now, read off the label, checked against your allergies and conditions. That is a question about a single object, and it needs no history at all.

If the question you have is the first one, this page should send you to Fooducate. We are not a tracker and have no plans to become one.

Where the two actually diverge

Nutrition versus ingredients. A grade is mostly a nutritional judgement: sugar, fat, fibre, calorie quality. Pura is looking at the ingredient list itself, including the additives, the preservatives, and the things that only matter because of who you are. A product can be nutritionally unremarkable and still contain the one thing you cannot have.

Food only versus three categories. Fooducate is food. Pura also reads cosmetics and supplements, scored on their own terms rather than through one shared set of criteria.

A database versus a photograph. Fooducate scans barcodes. Pura reads the label from a photo, which is why it works on the local brand, the import and the thing too new to be in anyone’s database. The cost is that a bad photo fails in ways a barcode does not.

A grade versus a profile. A letter grade means the same thing for everyone. That is its strength and its ceiling. It cannot know that you are avoiding sesame, or that you are reading labels differently for the next nine months.

Where Fooducate is better

Tracking, plainly. If you want to see the week rather than the item, we are the wrong tool and it is worth saying so on our own site.

The grade is also faster. In a supermarket aisle with a queue behind you, a letter beats a sentence, and anyone who claims otherwise has not stood in that queue.

Where Pura is better

Products no database contains. Cosmetics and supplements alongside food. And any question where the answer turns on your allergies or conditions rather than on the product’s nutrition profile.

Using both is reasonable

Genuinely. They answer different questions, and nothing about one rules out the other. We would rather say that than construct a rivalry that does not exist just because both apps involve pointing a phone at a packet.
