Label check
Checking shampoo for fragrance
Look at the ingredient list for the exact shampoo, not just its scent description. Fragrance ingredients can be present even when the product is described as unscented.
Part of Fragrance allergy
This check covers US labels. Start with the exact package and variant you have, then use the steps below. Explore more skin & hair checks.
What to look at
- Match the shampoo variant and size.
- Read the full list for fragrance or parfum.
- Keep a named fragrance allergy separate from a general preference for less scent.
Read this label.
Unscented shampoo; fragrance listed near the end
Illustrative excerpt · not a real productIts position does not make the fragrance disappear. A fragrance-avoidance preference still needs the full name check.
Why this reading matters
Fragrance mixtures can be declared collectively. Unscented products may still use masking fragrance, so lack of a noticeable smell does not establish a fragrance-free formula. US Food and Drug Administration.
Cosmetic ingredients are generally ordered by predominance, with exceptions for ingredients at one percent or less and color additives. The list is not a table of ingredient concentrations. US Food and Drug Administration.
What the label cannot settle
A label scan cannot reveal every component of a collectively declared fragrance mixture.
Put the check to work
Compare the exact words and amounts on your package with the example. If a panel is missing, a photo is unreadable or the manufacturer has not disclosed a detail, keep that detail as unknown. A different flavor, shade or formulation needs its own check.
