Label check
As packaged vs as prepared on Nutrition Facts
A prepared-food column can include ingredients added during preparation. Check the column heading before comparing a dry mix with a finished dish or using different preparation ingredients.
This check covers US labels. Start with the exact package and variant you have, then use the steps below. Explore more food checks.
What to look at
- Read each column heading before recording a number.
- Match the preparation directions to the prepared column.
- Keep any substitutions separate from the printed example.
Read this label.
As packaged: 5 g protein. As prepared with milk: 9 g protein.
Illustrative excerpt · not a real productThe prepared figure includes the specified preparation. Using water instead does not support copying the 9 g figure; you would need the relevant ingredient amounts to recalculate.
Why this reading matters
An additional nutrition column may describe food prepared with specified ingredients. Read those preparation instructions with the column; a different addition or recipe is not automatically represented. eCFR / US Food and Drug Administration.
What the label cannot settle
A printed preparation example does not cover every recipe change. Do not infer a personal nutrition plan from a single nutrient or silently mix packaged and prepared figures.
Put the check to work
Compare the exact words and amounts on your package with the example. If a panel is missing, a photo is unreadable or the manufacturer has not disclosed a detail, keep that detail as unknown. A different flavor, shade or formulation needs its own check.
