Label check

Reading a gluten-free supplement claim

Check the actual supplement for a gluten-free claim and read all ingredient information. A supplement format or nutrient name does not establish gluten-free status.

Part of Avoiding gluten

This check covers US labels. Start with the exact package and variant you have, then use the steps below. Explore more supplements checks.

What to look at

  1. Find the claim on the exact package.
  2. Read Supplement Facts and Other Ingredients.
  3. Resolve unclear grain ingredients or conflicting statements before relying on the claim.
A little practice

Read this label.

Supplement label has no visible gluten-free statement

Illustrative excerpt · not a real product
What it tells you

This example leaves the claim unestablished; it does not prove the product contains gluten.

Why this reading matters

Gluten-free is a voluntary claim with defined US conditions, including less than 20 parts per million gluten. Wheat-free and an ingredient list with no obvious gluten names are not equivalent evidence. US Food and Drug Administration.

Ingredients already declared inside Supplement Facts need not be repeated outside it. Other ingredients, such as capsule materials or formulation ingredients, can appear in a separate list. US Food and Drug Administration.

What the label cannot settle

A label scan cannot measure trace gluten or verify manufacturing controls.

Put the check to work

Compare the exact words and amounts on your package with the example. If a panel is missing, a photo is unreadable or the manufacturer has not disclosed a detail, keep that detail as unknown. A different flavor, shade or formulation needs its own check.
