Label check

Checking a hypoallergenic body lotion

Treat hypoallergenic as a front-label claim, then check the ingredients you personally need to avoid. It is not a federal guarantee of fewer reactions.

Part of Sensitive skin

This check covers US labels. Start with the exact package and variant you have, then use the steps below. Explore more skin & hair checks.

What to look at

  1. Find your specific avoid-list names.
  2. Check fragrance information separately.
  3. Keep the packaging so you can identify the exact formula if you need to ask the maker.
A little practice

Read this label.

Hypoallergenic lotion; fragrance appears in the list

Illustrative excerpt · not a real product
What it tells you

The hypoallergenic wording does not replace the fragrance check. Neither word predicts how a particular person will respond.

Why this reading matters

There is no federal standard defining hypoallergenic cosmetics. That front-label term cannot establish that a formula will suit a particular person. US Food and Drug Administration.

Fragrance mixtures can be declared collectively. Unscented products may still use masking fragrance, so lack of a noticeable smell does not establish a fragrance-free formula. US Food and Drug Administration.

What the label cannot settle

If you are investigating a reaction, a label comparison cannot diagnose its cause.

Put the check to work

Compare the exact words and amounts on your package with the example. If a panel is missing, a photo is unreadable or the manufacturer has not disclosed a detail, keep that detail as unknown. A different flavor, shade or formulation needs its own check.
