Reading labels for acne-prone skin

One of the few shelves where the concentration is printed, next to a scale of numbers that measures a rabbit's ear.

Acne is unusual on this site, because for once the label tells you the number.

The shelf where strength is printed

Acne treatments containing certain actives are drugs in the United States, not cosmetics. That means a monograph, a drug facts panel, and a stated concentration.

The regulation names them and their ranges: Benzoyl peroxide at “2.5 to 10 percent”, Salicylic acid at “0.5 to 2 percent”, sulfur at “3 to 10 percent”, and resorcinol at 2 percent when combined with sulfur.

Compare that with the serum next to it, where an ingredient list gives you an order and no quantities at all. On this one shelf you can compare products by strength, and that is worth using.

The number worth knowing about benzoyl peroxide: the range runs to 10 percent, and the clinical literature has repeatedly found lower concentrations to work comparably with less irritation. Buying the strongest one available is not obviously the right move, and the range on the shelf is not a quality ladder.

The numbers that are not a standard

Alongside that shelf sits the comedogenic scale, and it is the opposite kind of number.

A 2026 dermatology review records that comedogenicity ratings “were based on rabbit ear bioassays, which overestimate real-world likelihood of poor blockage in humans”, and that “modern dermatology no longer relies on ingredient-level comedogenicity lists; current evidence supports evaluating whole formulations rather than single ingredients”.

So one number on this shelf is a legally required concentration and the other is a discredited animal assay applied to the wrong unit. They look equally authoritative in a shopping guide. The longer version is in the guide on what comedogenic ratings measure.

Non-comedogenic is also not a regulated term. There is no required test and no threshold.

What the evidence does say about cosmetics and acne

Discrediting the ratings is not the same as saying products do not cause breakouts. Acne cosmetica is real and was described in 1972.

A 2025 case-control study found that “facial cleansers ( P =0.04), foundation ( P= 0.03), and powders ( P= 0.01) were related with an increased risk of acne”.

Notice the unit. Product categories, not ingredients. That is the formulation-level finding, and it is the one an ingredient list cannot deliver.

Reading a routine rather than a list

Look for the drug facts panel first. It tells you whether there is an active and how much. If there is no panel, the product is a cosmetic and no concentration is disclosed.

Judge the product, not the tail of the list. Below one percent the order is unordered, so a name near the end carries almost no information.

Change one thing at a time. Acne responds over weeks. A routine changed wholesale teaches you nothing about which part mattered.

Your own history beats any table. A product that broke you out is data about you. An ingredient appearing on a list is not.

The ingredients unfairly on the avoid-lists

Dimethicone is near the top of most of them and is among the least reactive things in cosmetics. Petrolatum is occlusive by design and its reputation here comes from a rating rather than from human evidence.

Where an ingredient has a real record against it, this site says so on its own page with the source attached, rather than through a number in a table.

The actives worth knowing beyond the monograph

Azelaic acid is used at 15 to 20 percent, works on several mechanisms at once, and is one of four topical ingredients a clinical body names as usable in pregnancy.

Niacinamide is well tolerated at neutral pH and is the usual companion when something stronger is drying the skin out.

Retinol is the cosmetic relative of prescription tretinoin, at a concentration the label does not state, which is the drug and cosmetic line running through one molecular family.
